Textbooks & course reserves
Q: Does the Library loan textbooks?
- The Library loans some textbooks through Course Reserves. For 1L classes and bar courses, there is usually one print copy of the textbook for each class. Course reserves are available for limited four (4)-hour checkout during Library business hours and are located in the Library’s Reserves Room (behind the Circulation Desk). Course reserves are shared among students and the Library does not recommend relying exclusively on them for textbook access.
Carrels & places to study
Q: How do I find out my assigned carrel?
- 1Ls and LLMs are assigned a carrel by the Law Library, two students per carrel. Carrel assignments are usually made within the first two weeks of school. See Carrels and Study Areas for more information.
Q: Where can I study in the library?
- Tables in the main Reading Room on the first floor of the library and in the Darling Lounge on the second floor are unassigned and available for law student study. Carrels in the stacks and in the North and South Reading Rooms are assigned. However, if a carrel assignee is not seated at a carrel, it is available for seating until the assignee returns.
Q: Can I use a Group Study Room?
- Group Study Rooms are available to law students only. For information on how to reserve, see Group Study Rooms.
Study aids
Q: I hear the library has free online study aids. Where can I find them?
- The Library offers a number of online study aids, including outlines, nutshells, tutorials, audio lectures, and more in-depth materials on law school course topics. See Study Aids and Exam Preparation Materials.
Westlaw, Lexis & other databases
Q: I'm having trouble with Westlaw/Lexis. Who do I contact?
- Librarians can troubleshoot or connect you with Westlaw or Lexis help desks.
Q: Can I get a Westlaw/Lexis/Bloomberg Law password?
- You will receive instructions for setting up your Westlaw and Lexis accounts in your Legal Research & Writing classes. Stop by the Reference desk or email the librarians at lawlibref@ucdavis.edu to register for a Bloomberg Law account.
Food & coffee
Q: Where can I get coffee?
- King Hall has a kiosk serving Peet's Coffee outside on the North side of the building. For open hours, see King Hall Coffee. See Campus information for food locations on campus.
