Researching Law School Papers

This guide will help you find your topic, perform a preemption check, and research your topic using Mabie Law Library and UC Davis main library databases.

Have a general idea of your topic area?

Do some searching in your topic area - law review articles and books will raise questions and issues for further study

  • Come up with key words. Run some preliminary searches in Google to make sure you are using the right key words
  • Enter your key words in HeinOnline Law Journal Library
    • Use "Advanced Search"
    • Search either full text or title
  • Enter your key words in the Mabie Law Library catalog to search for books in your topic area
  • As you search, learn from your results. Add additional terms to your list of key words.

Where to look for inspiration

  • Circuit splits - report of circuit court splits published by U.S. Law Week
  • U.S. Law Week - national legal news coverage, including major cases and pre-decisional developments
    • ​Click on "Subscribe to Newsletter" on the upper right side to receive alerts
    • Bloomberg Law account required. Contact a librarian at lawlibref@ucdavis.edu to set up.
  • Bloomberg Law News - news and analysis on wide range of legal subjects, divided by topic
    • Hover over "Bloomberg News" at the left-hand side
    • A list of topics will appear
    • Select topic
    • To subscribe, click on "Subscribe to Newsletter" on the upper right side

  • Law360 - daily coverage of wide number of subject areas organized as topical newsletters
    • Sign in with your Lexis ID and password
    • Click on "SEE ALL SECTIONS" at the top right to view articles by topic
    • To subscribe to a Newsletter click "NEWSLETTERS" at the top right, then select topic

  • Legal blogs - often publish new developments in particular areas of practice
    • SCOTUSblog - publishes information on cases before the U.S. Supreme Court
    • Westlaw Legal Blogs - view content from a large number of legal blogs
